There are many places on Tybee that would be well worth your time to visit. As a site in progress we have listed out a few of those that are really popular with
visitors, we'll continue to add more over time.
Tybee Post Theater is truly a historic venue in so many ways. You'll find it located in
the center of the Fort Screven Historic District, of Tybee Island. Built in 1930 as a movie house for the benefit of locally stationed soldiers. The movie house ceased operation in the 1960's yet in
2015, it was reopened as a performing arts and movie venue, for Tybee residents and visitors.
The Theater is a symbol of Tybee Island’s commitment to historic preservation- and the
value placed on cultural heritage of the area. You'll discover the venue includes a concert hall to showcase live music, dance and comedy performances; with a colorful line up of acts,
performers and events all year round. If you visit the Theater's website make a point to check out the 'Tybee's Got Talent' show, scheduled for 30 September 2017; the event shows off the best
singers, dancers and other performers from Tybee Island.
The site is also a stage for local and touring theatrical troupes. There is of course
the movie house, offering a wide range of first run, classic and children’s films. The Tybee Post Theater also serves as as a cultural venue for readings, recitals, assemblies and educational
programming for children. Plus it offers a unique venue for weddings, meetings, private screenings, or film/photo shoots etc. The full list of rental options can be found on the Theater's
By the way, thankfully this important landmark was saved from being demolished in 2000
by the City of Tybee Island and the Tybee Island Historical Society. The non-profit Friends of the Tybee Theater was created to raise the funds necessary to acquire and restore this local treasure
into a truly unique cultural arts center.
